Harry Barton

1916 - 2006

Born in Belfast, Harry Barton was a playwright and writer for radio. He was creator of the leprechaun Mr Mooney (the public relations officer of the Queens Own Loyal Sinn Féin Republican Volunteers) whose weekly monologues were broadcast on Radio Ulster for many years and later published as Yours Till Ireland Explodes and Yours Again, Mr Mooney (Blackstaff Press). He also wrote plays for BBC radio about his time in the navy, including plays such as Battleships and The Albatross and the Elephant's Eggs. He contributed regularly to Punch, the London-based satirical magazine, and had a novel published, With a Flag and a Bucket and a Gun (Hodder and Stoughton, 1959).
