Michael J. Murphy (2)

1913 - 1996

Raised near Slieve Gullion in Armagh, Murphy left school at 14 and worked as a farm labourer, later becoming a freelance writer and folklorist. He joined the Irish Folklore Commission 1942, and later joined the Folklore Dept of University College Dublin. He issued the successful Mountain Year (first edition in 1964 and a 2nd edition 1975), dealing with the folk-life of Slieve Gullion, South Armagh.
