Grace Butt

Grace Butt was born in Brigus, Newfoundland. In 1937 she founded the St. John's Players, Newfoundland's first theatre company. She organized the first committee for Provincial Drama Festivals. In 1945 she wrote and directed the first full-length Newfoundland play. Subsequent plays have been produced on stage and CBC Radio. Publications include plays, poems, short stories, and articles. Memorial University conferred on her the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters in 1981.
