1882 - 1950
James Stephens wrote gently satirical fables based on the world of fairytales he adored. He first worked as a solicitor's clerk for ten years before breaking into Dublin literary circles to become a well-known nationalist and socialist poet. In 1915, he was appointed to the staff of the National Library. He left Ireland a decade later for London and gave frequent performance readings in America.
