DOUGLAS HYDE (DUBHGHLAS DE HÍDE)

1860 - 1949

'An Craoibhín Aoibhinn', Douglas Hyde. One of Ireland's major figures. He was the first President and he wrote or translated ten short plays between the years 1901 and 1904. His play Casadh an tSúgáin (1901) was hugely significant in that it was one of the first plays ever staged in the Irish language and the first of the Irish Literary Theatre's 'peasant' plays.
