ÚNA BEAN UÍ DHIOSCA

1880 - 1958

Born Elizabeth Rachel Leech she had her early schooling in Neuchatel in Switzerland where she became fluent in French. On her return to school in Alexandra College Dublin she became very interested in the Irish language and is credited with persuading the school authorities to add it as a subject on the curriculum. She married Reginald McClintock Dix and they adopted two orphans of the Vignoles family, one of whom is Peter Dix the actor. She was very active in the co-operative movement and in the Irish Countrywomen’s Association in particular. She wrote three novels and the play Cruadhchás na mBaitsiléirí in the 1930s.
