This Sh*t Happens All the Time

OVERVIEW

  • Playwright

    Amanda Verlaque

  • Synopsis

A young woman falls in love. Her girlfriend’s jealous ex-boyfriend responds with threatening behaviour, then murderous intent. In 2019 he’d be arrested, but in Belfast 1992 homophobic hate crime law doesn’t exist. Reporting incidents to the police about someone coming for you because you’re queer may not get you anywhere but in trouble. This one-woman play draws on a personal story to explore the terrifying experience of queer baiting. Using first person narrative and reminiscences of queer life in the 90s, it asks why the privileges and protections granted to most of society remained out of reach for Northern Ireland’s LGBT+ community.
