Craiton Rectory, and the residence of Mr. Simpson-Barnes.
David Semple, a Church of Ireland clergyman, has dreamed for years of finding the money to establish Ulster Boytown, a home for unwanted boys. With the declaration of an election, and the decision of ambitious, wealthy Mr Simpson-Barnes to stand for election, Semple's dream suddenly becomes a distinct possibility. Only the persistent questioning of his spirited, independent-minded wife Anne on the topic of selfishenss stands in Semple's way - but Anne's queries prove very astute and difficult indeed.
