McLoughlan, an American entrepreneur, shakes up a sleepy Ulster village when he comes over to establish new industrial works. Seeking to expand this successful business, he tries tobuy land from Lady Loftus, owner of a neighbouring demense. Loftus refuses, detesting industrialism and allying herself with discontented workers seeking better wages and conditions, sets about making McLoughlan's situation very difficult. After a series of strikes and explosions, the works are abandoned. McLouglan survives, however, and remains defiant even in face of financial ruin. Despite everything that has happened, his can-do attitude remain unchanged.
