The play centres on two families, The O’Donnells and the Kearneys, each eager to make marriage matches for their children with sound financial gain. Donal Kearney arranges for Andy Hyde, wealthy and returned from America, to marry his daughter, Ellen. But Hyde does not appear as arranged. Similarly, David O’Donnell’s intended does not appear. A match is made between the two young people. Just as the deal is done Hyde appears flashing his bankbook. Donal Kearney reneges on the arrangement with the O’Donnells and the two young lovers are left devastated.
