Also known as the Empire Players, the Belfast Repertory Theatre Company was established in 1929 with the aim of creating a 'Little Theatre' of sorts. Initially producing quite light work, the company subsequently produced many of the plays of Belfast shipyard writer Thomas Carnduff, and won a name for itself for successfully presenting a succession of tough urban realistic working-class dramas. The company folded in the late 1930s.
