Founded 1899 by W B Yeats, Lady Gregory and Edward Martyn. 'We propose to have performed in Dublin in the spring of every year certain Celtic and Irish plays, which whatever be their degree of excellence will be written with high ambition, and so build up a Celtic and Irish school of dramatic literature'.
1899 Company's first performance, W B Yeats's Countess Cathleen. The Irish Literary Theatre was a precursor to the Abbey Theatre, founded in 1903 by W. B. Yeats and Lady Augusta Gregory.
