GEORGE FITZMAURICE

1878 - 1963

George Fitzmaurice was born in County Kerry in 1878. His works were published by the Dolmen Press under the titles Dramatic Fantasies (1967) and Plays (1969). 'Thd Dandy Dolls', famously rejected by the Abbey in 1911, was first staged by Austin Clarke's Lyric Players in 1945. Following Fitzmaurice's death in Dublin, his play, 'The Enchanted Land', was produced posthumously by the Abbey Theatre in 1976. Dramatic works not listed here include 'The Green Stone', premiered by the Rathmore Drama Group in Kerry in 1978, 'One Evening Gleam', produced by the Fortune Society in Dublin in 1952, and 'The Toothache', presented as part of Listowel Writers' Week in 1972.
