Joseph Campbell (2)

1879 - 1944

Joseph Campbell was a poet and playwright involved in the early years of the Ulster Literary Theatre, who often published under the Irish version of his name Seosamh MacCathmhaoil. His sister, Josephine Campbell, also performed with the company, and eventually married playwright/actor Rutherford Mayne (Samuel John Waddell). As a young man he collaborated with the composer Herbert Hughes on English-language versions of Irish folk songs, the first volume of these was published as 'Songs of Uladh' in 1904. His publications include 'The Garden of the Bees' (Belfast: W. Erskine Mayne; Dublin: Gill 1905); 'The Rush-Light' (Dublin: Maunsel & Co. 1906); 'The Gilly of Christ' (Dublin: Maunsel & Co. 1907) and 'The Mountainy Singer' (Dublin: Maunsel 1909.)
