OLIVER ST JOHN GOGARTY

1878 - 1957

Oliver St John Gogarty, born in Dublin in 1878, was a poet, playwright and novelist. His plays were produced under the Nom de Plume Gideon Ousley. The son and grandson of doctors, he embarked on a medical career. His novel, Tumbling in the Hay (1939) gives an account of medical student life in Dublin at the beginning of the twentieth century. An athelete, and champion cyclist, he was also an enthusiastic early motorist and Ireland’s first amateur aviator. His autobiographical book As I was going down Sackville Street was published in 1937.
