Italian dramatist, poet, and librettist. His most successful are The Crafty Widow (1748); The Antiquarian's Family (1749), The Comic Theatre (1750), and La Locandiera (1753). His plays moved Italian theatre from the stock characters of Commedia Dell Arte to a style closer to psychological realism.
