French novelist, essayist, playwright, poet and journalist. He wrote about country life, about sexual repression, and the difficulty of balancing love and sex. He was virulently opposed to fascism and had to go into hiding when France was occupied in WWII. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1952.
