Born in Dublin, educated by the Christian Brothers of Synge Street, McCann worked as journalist and wrote plays for Radio Éireann and later, the Abbey Theatre. Elected to the Dáil in 1939, where he served until 1954. He also served as Dublin's Lord Mayor, 1946-47 and 1964-65. His plays include Give me a bed of Roses, Early and Often, Blood Is Thicker Than Water and Twenty Years a Wooing.
