Suzanne and the Sovereigns

An extravaganza in four acts

OVERVIEW

  • Playwright

    Gerald Macnamara  Lewis Purcell

  • Notes

The actors in the premiere production are not known, due to the Ulster Literary Theatre policy at this time of not naming its cast or crew members in company programmes.

  • Synopsis

A satire in which a deputation from Belfast's Sandy Row is sent to King William III, asking that he come to Ulster to save the daughter of their local Grand Master, Suzanne, from the unwelcome attentions of King James. Rapidly, however, both King William and King James become eager rivals for the elusive Suzanne's hand, and equally eager to avoid accepting responsiblity for Ulster. With generals prepared to support them or change thinking at the promise of a sandwich, all are finally scandalised by Suzanne's elopment - with neither.
