Twenty years ago, Peadar was imprisoned on suspicion of having attacked his old friend Seán Burke and robbed a sum of money from him. Burke died as a result of his injuries. Despite the fact that the stolen money was found on his person, Peadar is entirely innocent. One day he gets talking to a younger prisoner who is about to finish his sentence, leave the prison, and marry his sweetheart. As the coversation progresss, Peadar realises that this is the man who robbed Seán Burke and unwittingly killed him. When he thinks of the young girl outside, waiting to be reunited with her lover after all this time, Peadar decides to hold his tongue. He thus sacrifices his own personal freedom for the young couple's future happiness.
