St. John Greer Ervine
The kitchen of a farm house in Co. Down over the course of a fortnight during the late summer of 188-.
Witherow, the greedy village miller, has his heart set on acquiring John Ferguson's farm as well as the hand of Ferguson's daughter, Hannah.Caeser, the local grocer,threatens to murder Witherow and promises to pay off the Fergusons' mortgage Hannah agrees to marry him instead. She refuses. Hannah's brother Andrew sneaks out of the house to get revenge. Ceasar is arrested for Witherow's murder but it is Andrew who eventually confesses to the crime. A letter then arrives from John Ferguson's brother in America with money to put a stop to the foreclosure on the house.
