Shawshank State Penitentiary, late 1940s - 1960s.
Falsely convicted of murdering his wife and her lover, banker Andy DuFresne is sentenced to two consecutive life sentences in Shawshank prison. He befriends fellow inmate Red, a longterm inmate of the jail, and quickly establishes a reputation for, among other things, his financial knowhow. One day in the late 1960s, Andy mysteriously vanishes. It is discovered that he has been patiently working away on an escape route for nearly twenty years, hiding the growing hole in the wall behind his collection of posters. Sometime later he is reunited with Red, the latter finally getting parole after forty years behind bars.
