The promotional leaflet for the original production of The Green Shoot states that the play was 'Inspired by the life and poems of John Hewitt'; the published playscript, however, lists 'the poetry and prose of John Hewitt and the diaries of his wife, Roberta' as the original material on which the play is based.

  • Synopsis

The Green Shoot is a one-man show inspired by the life and poems of John Hewitt. A Protestant, republican, regionalist and self-styled man of the left, Hewitt was pitted against the conservatism of the Ulster establishment. 'The Green Shoot' presents the journey that led him to England from the country he loved, and back again.
