OVERVIEW

    John P Rooney

  • Notes

This play was written for 8-11 year olds and would be particularly suitable as a cross-community contact event. Squinty & the Scotch Giant is relevant to the cross-curricular themes of Education for Mutual Understanding and Cultural Heritage (UK curriculum).

  • Synopsis

It is Easter Monday night, 15th April 1941, and Hitler's Luftwaffe is about to take Belfast by surprise. In a terrace house in the city three children and a baby are home alone. As the bombs begin to fall, a mysterious stranger arrives to watch over them during that dreadful night. Cuey and Trish think that he said his name was Finlay but Squinty thinks he said something else. Who is the mysterious stranger and why does he know so much about wars and battles? This is a play which, by entwining the story of the Belfast Blitz with tales of the legendary Finn McCool, examines the nature of war and conflict against the background of a cultural identity that is common to all.
