In Gogol's play, the dispossessed are shopkeepers, in Adios Amigos they are Nori Indians. In both cases, the statement is the same - a centralised political system, hijacked by a particular section of society, inevitably becomes corrupt and inefficient and dehumanises the luckless majority.
