The McAleer's cottage, townland of Drumgrone, mid-Monaghan, and Inver Hall.
In the kitchen of a small farmhouse, two leading Provos are preparing for a mission. Meanwhile the two sons of the house take leave of their bed-ridden mother, who is proud of their skill at clock-making - and bomb-making. A retired army colonel, his alcoholic wife, their daughter and neighbours are relaxing at home after dinner when the Provos burst in and take them hostage.
