    Set in and around a Belfast housing estate, Rough Beginnings explores the hopes and aspirations of young people in a hostile modern world. Gip gets a trial for an English football club, Jimmy, turned down by the navy because of colour blindness, cannot find a job while Anton, brain-damaged as a child, needs Gip to lead and guide him.
