Martin Murphy
A play for primary school students.
The play deals with the subject of difference – cultural, physical, and intellectual - by taking the pupils on an interactive journey to the time of the Wild West in America. By enrolling them as characters in a 19th-century story, Good as Gold brings the children face to face with problems of relevance to their own lives. Why does Johnny, a young Irish settler in a new country, behave in such an anti-social way? Why should a difference in someone's ability provoke a hostile reaction from their contemporaries? Why should a difference in cultural background create problems for the majority of the community?
