Garry Hynes
Island Protected by a Bridge of Glass is a fantasy of sixteenth-century Irish history with the historical character Graineuaile as its central character. The sixteenth century saw the erosion of the old Irish order - in 1530 Ireland was, in the main, Irish, but by the battle of Kinsale in 1601 English rule and influence dominated the country. The play focuses on Graineuaile's obsession with the brooding royal presence of Elizabeth I.
