Late in the night, the half-blind and ageing Shem or Jem or Seamus or James or whateveryoucallim is valiantly trying to give the kiss of life to his latest offspring 'Finnegans Wake'. A little the worse for wear from too much of the hard stuff, he is bolstered by the phantoms of the past.
