    Axenty Ivanovich Poprishchin is a minor civil servant who spends most of his day sharpening pens. He's obsessed with class, rank, status and his own lack of all three. He's badly dressed, his hair sticks out like hay and he's madly in love with the boss's daughter, who hasn't noticed that he exists. One day he hears two dogs talking on the streets...
