Sensitive, intelligent Anne Lavelle lives in a tightly-knit rural area where she has suffered humiliation all her life, being stigmatised as an illigitimate child. When a new-born child is found abandoned in the district, she is immediately suspected by the community, and one by one, even her former supporters reject her and she becomes an outcast.
