  • Synopsis

The McFalls, a working-class Belfast family, fall into an inheritance and move to Derrygowan House, a long-established mansion. There, Mrs.McFall takes very well to the family's new surroundings and society, but husband David McFall adjusts poorly and misses the old ways and companions. Then financial disaster strikes, and the family moves again, first to a more downmarket Belfast villa, and then back to where they began. This shock proves too much for Mrs. McFall, who gradually loses her mind, and the play ends in tragedy.
