Outside Monahan's farmhouse.
In this comedy of errors, a farmer gets land by compulsory purchase and tries to put one over on his neighbour but ends up having some of his own land compulsorily bought to house a labourer from his neighbour's farm. All the while, the poor labourer falls in love with a girl but she can't love him while he has no home of his own. WHen he eventually gets one he has changed his mind about the girl, until he sees the error of his ways and he falls back in love with her.
