Margaret O'Leary
The action takes place in the County Cork.
Remarking on the audience's enthusiastic reaction to the play, critic Joseph Holloway suggested that O'Leary's piece was in some respects a female response to Synge's Playboy Of The Western World, and that the gypsy Ellen Dunne bore certain similarities to Christy Mahon.
Maurice O'Hara, a widower with two children, falls in love with gypsy Ellen Dunn, but is unwilling to part with his life of comfort to live with her by the side of the road.
A realist peasant drama set in rural county Cork.
