Secretary Cooke has enlisted several informers in the hope of capturing the leader of United Irishmen. His niece Kate, however, develops an interest in Eustace Hyme, one of suspected rebels. Hyme is falsely accused of murder by one of Cooke's informers, and is forced to admit to the crime. Kate overhears the confession and believes him guilty. When she hears that Hime has been shot, she dies of a broken heart. Her death forces her uncle to question the value of his work.
