Rose MacKenna
Kathleen is engaged to Patrick Kane, a match greatly desirable to her widowed mother but greatly disagreeable to Kathleen herself. When a mayday call comes in to rescue the crew of a boat wrecked on the rocks, the cowardly Kane stays behind while Kathleen goes out with the party. Her experience of going out to sea proves an ephiphanal moment. Kathleen recognises that her brother and herself are 'aliens': highly educated but without the financial means to escape their situation.
