Deeds of Deceit

The Theft Of The Irish Crown Jewels

OVERVIEW

  • Playwright

    Matthew Ralli

  • Notes

    Commissioned by Dublin Castle/OPW.

  • Synopsis

On July 6th, 1907, just a few days before King Edward IV was due to visit Dublin, the Irish Crown Jewels were discovered stolen. Kept in a steel safe inside the Bedford Tower of Dublin Castle, police found no forced entry and not a single trace left by the thief. What began as an intense investigation dwindled into a carefully construed cover-up. Government records and files from Scotland Yard and the Metropolitan Police were systematically erased. The thief, or thieves, were allowed to escape punishment, the case dropped, and the jewels never recovered. In Deeds of Deceit, the crime is brought back to life as a colourful array of suspects are forced to stand trial. Staring them in the face is Truth herself and she is in no mood for airs and graces. Who will crack? Will the culprit finally reveal themselves? Or are some mysteries destined to haunt us forever?
