Jimmy McAleavey
In Static, a veteran astronaut in space and a lonely amateur radio operator in Donegal find each other by chance in the most unusual way. Initially inspired by a real-life event during the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, when cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev was left stranded in space by political chaos on earth, McAleavy’s play launches itself from this starting point to explore isolation, communication and the double-edged role of technology in contemporary life today, as its characters demonstrate their need for human connection against all the odds.
