Ladies and Gentlemen

OVERVIEW

  • Playwright

    Emma Donoghue

  • Setting

A dressing room of a New York vaudeville theatre in 1891.

  • Synopsis

In this play the past re-enacts itself on the night of a vaudeville star's last comeback. Inspired by an 1895 newspaper expose of Annie Hindle - the moustachioed Monarch of Male Impersonation who threw it all away for love - the play conjures up the tragicomic figure of a woman outed by the tabloids as 'a man's widow and a woman's widower'. The cast includes Tony, the crooked manager, Gilbert, the petticoat-clad female impersonator, and Ella, the stage-dresser who hungers for the spotlight. This play explores the dreams and survival strategies of emigrants, and the pleasures and risks of playing a role.
