The promotional leaflet for the original production of The Green Shoot states that the play was 'Inspired by the life and poems of John Hewitt'; the published playscript, however, lists 'the poetry and prose of John Hewitt and the diaries of his wife, Roberta' as the original material on which the play is based.

  • Synopsis

The Green Shoot is a one-man show inspired by the life and poems of John Hewitt. A Protestant, republican, regionalist and self-styled man of the left, Hewitt was pitted against the conservatism of the Ulster establishment.
