It was Eoghan Mac Giolla Bhríde and his sister Áine who founded Aisteoirí Ghaoth Dobhair in 1931 to produce plays in the Gaeltacht area of Na Rosann in Donegal. Their first production was 'I nAimsir an Mháirtínigh', an original play by Eoghan Mac Giolla Bhríde which was staged in the parish hall in Na Doirí Beaga in 1932. After an active campaign funding was raised to build a proper theatre and Amharclann Ghaoth Dobhair opened its doors in 1961. Still in existence the company functions almost exclusively in the amateur sector.
