JOHN BOYD

1912 - 2002

John Boyd was born in Belfast and educated at Queen's University and at Trinity College Dublin. He worked for a time as a teacher and occasional newspaper columnist before joining the BBC as a producer in the 1940s. He became literary adviser to the Lyric Theatre and editor of its journal, The Threshold. He was later appointed honorary artistic director of the theatre. His play The Flats (1971) is generally credited with being the first theatrical representation of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, post-1969.
