A formally inventive study of control and attachment, Breaking seeks to explore troubling questions about how people navigate abuse within relationships, asking how can we judge what is right and wrong when we lose the ability to trust our own judgement; what happens when trust is poisoned by distrust; and who gets the benefit of the doubt. By dividing and swapping the two lead roles across four actors, the play attempts to portray an abusive relationship from multiple sides, showing how coercive control intersects with other power imbalances across race, gender, class and sexuality.

In the original production, two female performers and two male performers alternated to play the the roles of Charlie and Sam. The gender of the character switched to match the gender of the actor currently playing the part.
