Ulster Group Theatre Ltd.

OVERVIEW

  • Description

In 1960 the Group theatre building was offered to comedian and actor James Young, who together with Jack Hudson rapidly made it the ‘Home of Ulster Comedy’. For the next decade, the Group saw premieres of long-running and hugely popular comedies by John McDonnell, as well as solo shows by Young himself.

These could not be sustained in the early years of the ‘Troubles’, however, and the Group went dark during the early 1970s. Re-opened in 1978, it has operated since as a home for amateur theatre companies. Its imminent closure was recently announced by Belfast City Council.
