Edna O'Brien

Edna O'Brien was born in County Clare in 1930. Her world-famous novels include 'The Country Girls', 'The Lonely Girl', 'Girls in their Married Bliss', 'August is a Wicked Month' ,'A Pagan Place' and 'Wild December'. Her early novels were banned in Ireland in the 1960s due to what was perceived to be inappropriately sexual content, but have since been recognised as classics. Dramatic works not listed here include 'Virgina' (Theatre Royal, 1981)and an adaptation of Iphigenia written especially for the Crucible Stage in Sheffield in 2003. In 2009 Edna O'Brien was presented a lifetime achievement award at the Irish Book Awards in Dublin. She is a member of Aosdána and lives in London.
