Declan Hughes

Declan Hughes was born in Dublin. He founded Rough Magic Theatre Company with Lynne Parker in 1984, was Artistic Director until 1992 and Writer-in-Residence until 1999. He directed sixteen of the company's productions and was nominated for a Harvey's Best Director Award in 1987. His first stage play, I Can't Get Started, was awarded the Stewart Parker Award and the BBC NI TV Drama Award for 1991. His plays, Digging for Fire and Love and a Bottle', a radical re-working of George Farquhar's 1698 comedy, together won a Time Out award in 1992. Hughes's work has been performed throughout Ireland and Britain, and in Europe, Canada and the US. A collection of four plays, Declan Hughes: Plays 1, was published by Methuen in 1998.
