Jennifer Johnston

1931 -

Jennifer Johnston was born in Dublin, the daughter of the noted playwright Denis Johnston. Among her prose works are the novels 'The Captains and the Kings', 'The Gates', 'How Many Miles to Babylon?', 'Shadows on our Skin' (shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1977), 'The Old Jest' (Winner of a Whitbread Award for Fiction in 1979), 'The Christmas Tree', 'The Railway Station Man', 'Fool's Sanctuary', 'The Invisible Worm' (shortlisted for the Sunday Express Book of the Year in 1991), 'The Illusionist', 'Two Moons', and 'This Is Not A Novel'. She has also written a number of radio plays and was awarded the Giles Cooper Award for Best Radio Play for 'O Ananias, Azarias and Misael', in 1989. The piece was also staged by the Abbey Theatre and is listed below. Jennifer Johnston was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Irish Book Awards in 2012 and is a member of Aosdána. She lives in Co Derry.
