1915 - 1967
Born in Galway, Macken wrote his first story aged 12. He joined An Taibhdhearc, the Irish language theatre based in Galway, at 17, where he acted, directed and wrote Irish plays. He acted at the Abbey during in 1940s and 50s. He played lead role in the Broadway production of MJ Molloy’s The King of Friday’s Men (1948). His plays include Home is the Hero (1954) and Twilight of A Warrior (1955), An Fear ón Spidéal (1945) and An Chailín Aimsire Abú (1943). He served as artistic director of the Abbey, from 1966, in the wake of an actors' strike against the management of Ernest Blythe.
