The Gate Theatre was founded in 1928 by Hilton Edwards and Micheál MacLiammóir and became internationally renowned as one of the most adventurous and far-sighted playhouses in Europe. During the forties and fifties the theatre continued under the dual directorship of Edwards-MacLiammóir and Lord Longford and flourished as the home of European and experimental drama.
In 1983, Michael Colgan became Director of the Gate. During his 33 years, he produced many high quality, award-winning plays and he established unique relationships with leading contemporary playwrights including Samuel Beckett, Harold Pinter and Brian Friel.
On 3rd April 2017, Selina Cartmell became Director of the Gate. She has directed a diverse range of work and her productions have won multiple theatre awards. Selina's inaugural season at the Gate begins on 12th July 2017.
